Business and Legal Forms for Illustrators
Published in Paperback by North Light Books (March, 1990)
Author: Tad Crawford
Average review score:

Great value!
Not only does this book present a wealth of practical information on the business end of illustration, but the included CD-ROM works for Macintosh users as well as Windows. The electronic versions really *work* and are easily customizable. A very well done and helpful publication.

Essential
A superb book! When you consider that I downloaded a single "shareware" contract for artists that the author wanted $50 for, you realize the value of this book. And this book comes with a CD-rom with all the forms in electronic format, so you don't even have to go to the trouble to type or scan them in! This is the essential book for all graphic artists.

An essential book for commercial artists!
I found this book to be very helpful and well- thought-out. The author has provided an extremely powerful tool. He has thoroughly covered practically every situation a commercial artist is likely to face. This book contains 21 complete tear-out forms appropriately prepared for specific business matters such as estimates, collaboration, illustrator-agent agreement, consignment and sale of artwork just to name a few. This new revised edition conveniently includes forms on a CD-ROM. It also includes a detailed explanation on how to use each form. The legal advice found in this book will surely save you a great deal of time and money which is invaluable to any working artist. Unless you are a ''starving artist'' who works for food only, this informative legal guide will no doubt prove itself very useful and effifcient. This is truly an essential book for commercial artists!

The Essential Guide to Fly-Fishing
Published in Paperback by Johnson Gorman Publishers (01 May, 1998)
Authors: Clive Schaupmeyer and Jim Crawford
Average review score:

Terrific,Clear and concise, easy to read and understand
The Essiential Guide to Fly Fishing is a rarity.,The author takes you step by step thru the process which to some can be very intimidating. In a very, down to earth process and without the technical jargon found in similer publication. Cleve provides you with a wealth of information and processes which allows everyone from the expert to the least experienced to enter the realm of the of Fly Fishing or simply increase their understanding and knowledge of the sport

As the owner of a Fly Shop, I have used this book, and will continue to use it as a reliable source of information to provide my customers with answers to their many technical questions. I highly recommend it as "required" reading in our fly fishing classes. Our copies sold out within two weeks of receipt.

Casting Instruction Alone is Terrific!
"Are You A Flailer?"

"BACK CAST: That part of the fly cast where the rod and line are lifted up and backward so the line travels straight behind the caster.

FORWARD CAST: The delivery portion of the fly cast. The forward cast starts when the line has straightened out behind.

FALSE CAST: Back and forward casts that allow the angler to lengthen the amount of line being cast before the line is allowed to drop to the water. False casts help the angler change the direction of casting. A few snappy false casts also help remove excess water from dry flies. False casting also is used to measure the distance of the cast relative to a rising fish. Many new fly-anglers false cast too much. That is, they cast back and forth in the same direction and do not let line out .. they just flail away with no real purpose." (from The Essential Guide to Fly Fishing.)

So, what is that all about? This is not a book review section, it's supposed to be about casting. Ok, those are from the glossary of a new soft cover book for anyone just getting into fly fishing. The author is Clive Schaupmeyer from Brooks, Alberta, Canada. It is published by Johnson Gorman Publishers, Red Deer Alberta, Canada. It is a very good book, 288 pages that cover the whole of fly fishing. For a new angler it will do a dandy job. What about casting? Yup, he covers that; not only how to, but where to, and why to, as well." (excerpt from Castwell Casting Corner, FlyAnglers OnLine")

Must-have book for the beginner fly fisher.
Fly fishing is a puzzle to a beginner. One of the pleasant aspects of managing a fly shop is helping new flyfishers assemble that puzzle and watch as their knowledge and skills grow. But, what do you do if the beginner doesn't live in a place that offers the fine instruction available from a fly shop? What text book do you recommend to the beginner who wants to learn fly fishing essentials on his own?

In the 34 years I've been fly fishing, I've read many books that covered parts of the fly fishing puzzle, but no single book that completely assembled it in simple, easy-to-read terms. 'The Essential Guide to Fly-Fishing' by Clive Schaupmeyer is the first book I've read that assembles the whole puzzle in simple, easy language.

Between the covers of this 288 page paperback book, you'll find complete, accurate information on gear selection and assembly, insect identification and the flies that match them, casting and line control, stream and lake strategies, hooking and releasing fish, and much more. And, the information you read is highlighted with over two hundred pictures and drawings. It is, in fact, the best and most complete guide to freshwater fly fishing I've read.

If you're a novice or intermediate flyfisher, you owe it to yourself to pick up a copy of this book. If you're just beginning, it's an essential tool you can't afford to be without. You can find it at your local fly shop, or contact Lonepine Publishers at 1-800-661-9017 and order a copy. At $17.95 US or $22.95 Canadian, it's a real bargain.

Eyewitness: Dance
Published in Hardcover by DK Publishing (01 June, 2000)
Authors: Andree Grau, Susannah Price, and Andy Crawford
Average review score:

Magic and Beauty
In ancient Greece, dance was seen as a gift. Dance is simply a series of movements performed in patterns and set to music. Every human society has some form of dance. It is a way to pass on history, exercise and express yourself in a way words can't.

In this colorful guide, the magic and beauty of dance is shown in step-by-step sequences and full-color photographs. The costumes are spectacular and children can see the costumes, learn the stories of the great classical ballets and discover why Javanese dancers "flow like water."

Dances include:

Ballet
Tonga - poetry interpreted in dance in the Pacific Island of Tonga
Flamenco - Spanish
Ghost Dance - Native American
Morris Dance - England
Gharata Natya - Classic Indian Dance (if you enjoy this - watch Lagaan)
Orissi, Eastern India - originally performed by temple dancers
Georgian Ballet - the costumes are amazing!
Modern Ballet
Ballroom Dancing
and many more...

There is a section on footwear and they show how a ballet shoe is made. They explain the process of creating costumes all the way from the drawings to the finished product. Makeup and set design is briefly discussed.

A section on famous dancers and choreography shows what it takes. Finally, they discuss dance crazes through time.

A trip around the world in dance!

Beautiful book about dancing
DK eyewitness books are some of the greatest non-fiction books around. The distinctive white background and high-quality photography gives this book an edge over any other nonfiction picture book. And -- these pictures are real! They're beautiful photos of all things related to dancing, accompanied by informative captions and text.

Learn about many different styles of dance, costumes and shows, performers, and many other dance-related topics (all augmented by beautiful museum-quality photos).

If you know someone (young or old) who is fascinated dancing, then you must introduce them to this book! It's a great lesson about dancing, and a beautiful book.

Eyewitness Dance
This book is excellent for the education of all types of dance. The pictures are colorful, the information is accurate, and it keeps the readers attention. It covers a variety of dances, and goes into detail about costumes and shoes. It is a good book for those interested in the art of dance, and dances from around the world.

Gravity and Grace
Published in Hardcover by Routledge (15 November, 2002)
Authors: Simone Weil, Emma Crawford, and Mario Von Der Ruhr
Average review score:

The struggles of a Russian Jew
This is a case of Dialectic Materialism approached through a Nietzsche perspective, a woman as an idealist scholar with an extraordinary Jewish background whose brother suffers the loss of his life at the hands of Nazis! Simone Petrement, Simone Weil's biographer and classmate [Ecole Normale et al], clearly presents the defeating struggles with which Ms. Weil must but stealthily reveal! To say she deplored her Jewish background would be to deny her devotion to her parents which could not completely be. Her struggle is not her with Jewism itself but with the affliction of her father, Dr. Bernard Weil (1872-1955) and her mother, the daughter of Mme. Reinherz. Try the perils of the afflicted Russian Jew who no longer finds palatable the mere potatoes which she herself chose. She subtly [quietly]pleaded for her parents' assistance and then rejected their offers through her inner anxiety, a struggle to preserve Humanity amongst those who spoke Omniscient Salvation in other languages but offered moral support to Russian Jews who didn't appreciate the blasphemy of stating "Jesus Christ" over and over again! Thus is the subtle and controversial attitude.

They called her the Red Virgin
Simone Weil's writings were impenetrable for me in the fifties. Now I have most of her works and I am frequently amazed at how penetrating are her ideas and thoughts, and how contrary to most thinking today. That in itself recommends her. She understands people, life, and suffering, and sees its purpose. She sees through all falseness to the goodness. Simone Weil is the most honest person I know or have heard of. Yet while her classmate, Simone de Beauvoir is famous Simone Weil is relatively unknown. She loves Plato, Buddhism, Geometry, Jesus, working people, her homeland, France, but she rejected the Catholic Church, baptism, and Judaism (her background). She is a saint if there ever was one. I am profoundly grateful for having known something of her, her diamond mind, and her beautiful soul.

Mind-blowing aphorisms...
This young lady's writings and personal story blow away most other 20th Century thinkers. These are mainly short blasts. Provocative. Accessible. Yet push you further than you've likely been. Lots of ancient Christian desert hermit influence (St. Theresa, St. John of the Cross, Philokalia) on this revolutionary, radical mind. Timeless. Challenging. Simple. Confounds modernism.

Ida:Her Labor of Love
Published in Paperback by Western Reflections Inc (15 December, 1998)
Authors: Carol Crawford McManus and Carol, C. McManus
Average review score:

One of my favorite books
An interesting and well written story of one woman's life. You will not be disappointed in this book. Ida's life is written in novel form with her many triumphs and disappointments drawing the reader in. I couldn't wait to get back to Ida and her life while I was reading this book.

Read this book!
I am not the typical book reader you usually see in this site. I seldom read, because I get easily distracted and bored. Yet this book was great. Now I want to read more books on Western Colorado hoping to find other stories as interesting as this was.

Ida : her labor of love
This book should be required reading for every woman living on the Western Slope of Colorado. The format reads like a novel, but Ms McManus inserts factoids at chapter breaks to remind the reader what else was going on in the state & nationally to put Ida's travails into perspective. I thoroughly enjoyed this read & would highly recommend it to anyone interested in Western History and women's adventure stories.

Long-Distance Genealogy

VA/MD Genealogy Buff
I checked this book out of the library because I'm doing my VA/MD family research from WA state. I now have to have my own copy, the information in this book is invaluable whether you are researching family that is across country or right in your very own state. The sample letters are a tremendous time-saver. Highly recommend this title.

Incredible!
I've been doing research from home for several years, and just got this book to see if it had any new ideas. I'm so glad I did! The author provides the kind of guidance that I haven't found in any other book -- extremely useful specifics that tend to be glossed over in other 'beginner' books. In addition, the author writes in such a clear, well-organized, and 'conversational' manner, the book is easy and pleasant to read. I've learned things from this book that have made it more than worth the price, and I can't recommend it highly enough. If I had to give up all my beginner- to intermediate-level genealogy books but one, this is the one I'd keep.

Great book for anyone doing genealogy research..
I first got this book from the library and it's one of the best genealogy books out there. The book tells you how to obtain documents, what to write, what section of the county offices to write to (although you have to look up individual addresses yourself); how to ask how cost of copies, etc..

For example it tells you what to ask for when wanting a copy of an ancestor's will - ask for "an estate file", then it gives you an example of what to write when asking for the cost and then the follow up letter after obtaining the cost.

It's a great book and I ended up buying a copy for myself.

Lucy Crawford's Hisotry of the White Mountains
For any one who is researching their family name of "Crawford and Rosebrook out of the White Mountains of New Hampshire and Vermont.
I have read this book several times and have learned a lot from it. I still continue to read it.
It took a considerable amount of determinaton from both of these families. They had the forsight to see the future and built on that.
Thorough good times and bad, they perservered.

The history and the hike
So you like to hike and you like history but you don't know where to turn. Then look no further, there is a book that has both of that. This book will keep you in suspence and wanting you to read more of it.So know you have a book to read and you didn't even know it.

AL HISTOIRE DE MAINTAINES
THIS BOOK WAS REALLY ABOUT A GUY WHO JUST WANTED TO FIND A TRAIL TO GET THROUGH THE WHITE MOUNTAINS SO OTHER VISITER OF THAT TIME COULD GET THROUGH. I THOUGHT IT WAS A GOOD BOOK FOR HISTORIANS WHO LIKE THE MOUNTAINS AND THE OUTDOORS. IT WILL WANT TO KEEP YOU READING TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS NEXT TO THE MAN. VERY STIMULATING AND KEEPS YOU ON THE EDGE OF YOUR SEAT.

Authors: Marilyn D. Anderson, Marilyn D. Anderson, and Mel Crawford
Average review score:

I'm the author, so I love it
NOBODY WANTS BARKLEY is the second in my series about Barkley the dog. In it I used my own background in obedience training and did some research on how the 4-H dog training program works. I already knew about farmers and sheep because my father raised sheep. I loved writing the scene about the dogs knocking over the table of refreshments.

It was a wonderful book!!
This book was wonderful because Barkley just wanted a friend and whith out knowing it he got into allot of trouble. I recomend this book to who ever love dogs.

Barkley was bad for a good reason.
No matter how hard he tries he can't stay out of trouble, he only wants a freind.

Dimensions of Prayer: Cultivating a Relationship With God
Published in Paperback by Upper Room (September, 2002)
Authors: Jeannie Crawford-Lee and Douglas V. Steere
Average review score:

Good Solid Basic Advice On Prayer For All Christians
Writing out of a Quaker background, the late Douglas Steere has offered excellent advice on prayer. Ostensibly for the beginner, this newly revised edition will be welcome and useful to all Christians. Steere has solid theology and is obviously a master of his material. He draws on a wide variety of authors and traditions and presents it all in a unified and simple way, easy to read and lucidly clear. He deals with the widest variety of topics: what prayer is, why we pray, the God-centered nature of prayer, meditation, oral prayer, intercessory prayer, congregational prayer, distractions, autosuggestion, habit and routine, to name but a few, and manages to cast new light and insight on each. A less fortunate feature of his style is his constant citing of other authors, some quotations magnificent finds, some barely apposite. It makes the text read at times like a pile of index cards. He may do it to undergird his own insights with external authority, but he himself speaks with sufficient obvious authority and reads best when he writes simply and without citations what is in his own heart and mind.

The Best!
This is a wonderful book. I LOVE it. It is divided into short sections that are rich and deep. I read it before praying each morning. I am sure i will read it again and again, and I'm buying three copies for friends. (I am a Quaker, like Steere).
